The right kind of food is THE most important way to avoid all childhood illnesses which are not genetic.  A child’s digestive system is delicate and not yet fully formed.  It cannot easily cope with diff to digest, rich food.  Avoid all cold foods, such as ice cream, yogurt and salads.  Make their diet bland and warm.  If they have a digestive upset add fennel seeds to food, to calm the stomach.

Problems with the lungs such as frequent colds, glue ear and allergies are often caused by diet.  The Chinese say that a poorly digestive system creates phlegm and the lungs store it.  So even nasal/lung problems should be addressed by strengthening the stomach.
